At McClarin Plastics, LLC we offer Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) services for the production of parts that are lightweight, extremely strong, dimensionally stable, and chemical- and wear-resistant.
This advanced process is ideal for parts that require superior cold weather impact resistance and performance.
RIM combines component chemicals with low viscosities into a heated mold at low temperatures and pressures, which can create very large components of varying shapes that weigh up to 50 lbs. Due to the low viscosity of the component chemicals, RIM molds are quickly and thoroughly filled—allowing us to mold parts as a single piece rather than molding several parts and assembling them. Mold costs are cut down since less heat is generated during the process.
RIM is often used to encapsulate materials and parts to strengthen them, or to add another layer of protection. We can use the RIM process to embed materials such as carbon fibers, glass fibers, and metals into your part, should you have an application that requires components with extra rigidity.
RIM parts exhibit superior surface appearance; the low component chemical viscosity allows for finer, more precise detail when parts are molded. RIM parts can easily take various paints or coatings, making them a popular choice for the automotive industry, or any industry that requires perfectly-matched painted parts.
In many cases, RIM components can be effective substitutes for metal because of their high strength and favorable weight advantage.
The RIM process allows considerable design freedom, and allows for the forming of parts that have both thick and thin walled sections, mold-in functional and structural inserts. Material choices include polyurethane, which creates a homogeneous flexible or rigid plastic, and polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD).
The low injection temperatures and pressures associated with the RIM process also enables us to implement lower cost tooling options such as aluminum as opposed to steel molds.
Our investment in product quality and continuous improvement processes has made us a leading global provider of plastic component parts to a diverse range of demanding industries. We also offer a full complement of value added services to manage your parts from design through delivery. The table below provides greater detail about our RIM services.
